At Ephesus, East met West. The Oriental culture mixed with the Greek civilization under Roman rule and laws. Oriental "mystics" and Greek "mythologists" accommodated one another but were both Pagan.
Each man had his own "gods" and he allowed everyone else the same privilege. Paul wrote to Ephesus to confim them in that Faith in Christ that they had sspoused, and to give them more exalted views of the love of God and of the full expression that this love found in Christ, and at the same time, to fortify their minds against the scandal of the Cross
