“As dying, and behold, we live”

The Merz Brothers and the Third Reich

First published in German as, “Was du bist, das sei auch ganz”: Die Brüder Merz und das Dritte Reich.

The cases of the three Merz brothers – Rudolf, August and Albert – in Nazi Germany are perhaps the most striking, and most terrible, examples of the sufferings of Christadelphian Brothers as a result of a refusal to perform military service. Years in a concentration camp in one case, a decade in a mental institution in another, and execution in the case of Albert – all were borne with extraordinary determination and fortitude for the sake of Christ.

This account of the brothers’ experiences includes an introduction to the historical and legal context which made such terrible injustice possible. Other chapters are devoted to two letters from Albert Merz, evidence of his courage and mature Biblical faith, and to the author’s visits to the concentration camp where August was held and to the site where Albert suffered his terrible fate.
