Right in the heart of the Bible is a book full of messages from the heart. The Psalms often express the innermost feelings adn deppest hopes of their authors. As the Israelite hymn book, the book of Psalms helped men and women of old raise their hearts and voices acceptably in praise of God.
It is no different today.Many find comfort, solace, and deep contentment from contemplanting the great truths expressed in the magnificent language and ideas of the Psalmsists.
But there are many aspects of the Psalms that are not easily understood. Is there anything special about Hebrew poetry, and about the way the Psalms are constructed that can help modern readers to get even more benefit from them? What about the various musical terms that are used, and the division of the Psalms into five books? Who wrote them, and do we need to know the ciriumstances that first caused them to be written?
As its title suggests, this work does not attempt to deal with the subject matter of every Psalm. It is not a commentary on the Pslams, but a handbook containing suggestions and ideas to be followed by anyone who wishes to improve their understanding of this special section of scripture.
Above all, it leads readers to see how the Psalms fill out other parts of God's word. Notably it increases our understanding of God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who himself meditated on the Psalms and drew strength from them.
