John the Baptist's work was in preparation for Chirst. Prior to his showing to Israel Jesus was in the privacy of Nazareth and largely unknown. Isreal was in a state of spiritual dormancy; hearts need to be
awakened and made receptive to the Gospel message through baptism. The men destined to be Christ's apostles and disciples had ye to be collected and prepared. The situation called for a forerunner.
God provided such a forerunner in John the Baptist. Zacharias recalles the destiny of his son as revealed by the angel Gabriel.
When the "glory of the Lord" was revealed in Jesus Christ, the work of the forefunner was finished. He was murdered on the wheim of a godless woman and the Saviour whom he had proclaimed testified to this greatness.
