An Exposition of Jonah and Nahum
This work is more than a commentary on the prophecies of Jonah and Nahum for it makes considerable reference to all the principal passages where Assyria is referred to in the record of Scripture, from Moses to Micah. The fact that Moses does make reference to Assyria (or Assur) and yet Nahum prophesied so much later, shows how long a time this people maintained an high profile in the family of nations. In fact the earliest reference to Nimrod as the founder of the city Nineveh shows that this people were always contemporary with Babylon, and shared a common founder.
The higher critics of the Bible in the nineteenth century made scathing comments upon Biblical references to Asysyria, for no one could find a skerrick of evidence in the Middle east to verify that it ever existed.
