The Pelican History of the Church Volume 2
This book has required much more time and work than I expected when it was first undertaken. It has also become a different kind of book. The difficulty of treating so large a subject in a single volume was already apparent, but at first it seem that the difficulty might be overcome by describing the life of the church at selected moments through the centuries in a series of essys. In the course of time however, the relations between the ecclesiastical developmenbt and the social change took so strong a hold on the work that the plan had to be altered. . .
